L.W. Conder Elementary Arts Integrated Magnet School "Super Start" Strings in Columbia, S.C. is home to a unique strings program that has been providing violin group instruction to young children for over ten years.

Currently, over 150 kindergarten-fifth grade students participate in lessons twice a week. In

2012, cello instruction was introduced to third-fifth graders and, last year, the strings program expanded to offer viola and bass lessons to upper elementary students. Conder’s Super StarStrings program was established in 2013 to offer rigorous instruction designed to challenge advanced strings students.

The additional after-school practice sessions required of Super Star Strings participants have yielded 15 to 36 dedicated players each year who thoroughly entertain audiences during performances at school and Richland Two district events, as well as during community presentations.

Super Star Strings students have consistently earned Superior ratings for their solo and small group performances at South Carolina’s prestigious Solo and Ensemble competition. Super Star Strings performing groups have also earned Excellent and Superior ratings from the South Carolina Orchestra Performance Assessment and from the Carowinds Music Festival. Former strings students have matriculated into music programs such as middle school orchestras, the USC Strings Project, Tri-District Arts Consortium, and the SC Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.
